John Puryear came back to Gallatin in 1990 with a degree in ornamental horticulture and landscape design from the University of Tennessee. He and his wife Laura, a horticulture graduate herself, settled here because his family had been part of the community since 1783. They started the business on the family farm on the north bank of the Cumberland River, and with help from relatives planted their first crop and built their first greenhouse.
Thirty-five years on, Puryear Farms employs more than a hundred full-time staff and serves a large region northeast of Nashville. The menu has grown to meet what the community asked for: design and build landscaping, hardscapes, property grounds maintenance, turf health management, irrigation installation and service, outdoor lighting, snow removal and exterior construction.
It is still a family-owned operation, and that is the point rather than a detail. The family atmosphere is what makes the care, the attention to detail and the knowledge stay in the building.
